The Eyes Have It - WIP

Description

Something I've been working on for the past few days. The first inkling of this drawing popped into my head when I saw the reveal trailer for Super Mario Odyssey during the Nintendo Switch presentation, and, being the fan of N64 Rare platformers that I am, the eyes on Mario's new cap in the game instantly reminded me of how so many inanimate objects in Banjo-Kazooie had googly eyes plastered on them (a practice seemingly being continued in Playtonic Games' BK spiritual successor Yooka-Laylee, which should totally also be on the Switch, by the way).

When I started drawing this, Banjo had a more saddened expression, but between that and Kazooie's expression seen here (which has remained completely unchanged from day one), it looked like I was saying the googly eyes were a bad thing, which couldn't be farther from the truth. Besides, the sympathetic smile Banjo is seen giving here is more in character for him, giving a more, "There now, the eyes aren't that bad," kind of connotation to what he's saying, while Kazooie is pretty much just saying, "Get used to it, bub," which is in line to how she was usually the one question the existence all of the sentient objects she and Banjo encountered in their games.

Stay tuned for a more finished version with all those newfangled bells and whistles, like shading and backgrounds! ;P

Speaking of googly-eyed objects in Mario games, have anyone noticed the inlfux of wide-eyed creatures from the 'Mario & Luigi' series? Trashure, Dream stone, Midbus (sorta), and various minor enemies comes to mind.
Also, like the bear-and-bird's adventures, the plumber bros RPG endeavors are chock-full of strange lands, bizarre events and crazy, over-the-top villain shenanigans!

Makes me wonder if Alpha Dream is trying to fill in the gap of humor Rare left in its wake...
